Ah, Thanksgiving on Friends—a time for turkey, awkward confessions, and, of course, the infamous meat-custard trifle. If you’ve ever wondered what culinary horror looks like, look no further than Season 6, Episode 9: The One Where Ross Got High. In this glorious instant classic of an episode, Rachel mistakenly combines an English Trifle custard desert recipe with a Shepherd’s (meat) Pie recipe, thanks to some good old-fashioned recipe page sticking (Chandler!). The result? A dessert only Joey Tribbiani could love.
This moment of gastronomic disaster led to one of the most hysterical scenes in Friends history, where Ross (David Schwimmer) attempts to keep a straight face while choking down what is supposed to be layers of jam, custard, beef, peas, and onions.
Now, you may think, “There’s no way the cast actually ate a beef-custard combo, right?” And you’d be right! The prop masters were kind enough to use whipped cream and bananas instead. But here’s where things take a stomach-turning turn.
LeBlanc revealed that, after one of the takes, Schwimmer discreetly spat out his mouthful onto his plate after shoveling the mock trifle down like a madman…perhaps just a little too fast even for a professional! In a cruel twist of fate, LeBlanc, who claims he had his head turned during the Schwimmer regurgitation event, unknowingly took Schwimmer’s plate, scooped up a generous helping, and ate his already-chewed-up leftovers. Yummy! Watch the epic behind the scenes footage below, sure to be a kick for Friends fans!
LeBlanc said he didn’t realize this had happened until the Season 6 wrap party, while watching the blooper reel – Whoopsie Daisy! Although, when we watch the blooper reel, it sure looks like he was looking right at Schwimmer as he spits out his leftovers, Schwimmer stating “It’s too much!” after shoveling a large helping in his mouth and letting it fall back onto his plate from his mouth. Either way, it’s super fun to re-live this very special back-stage comedic moment of Friends history with our Geek.Report family!
Ross: “It tastes like feet!“
Joey: “Whats not to like? Custard? Good! Jam? Good! Meat? Good!”
What do you think – did Leblanc see it and didn’t care, or was he just not paying attention as the director was yelling cut!? Maybe he was just so involved in the scene he didn’t notice! It does appear there are at least several clips spliced together in the blooper reel of this classic behind the scene moment – and boy does it make for a good laugh! You have to admit that the Friends cast had some of the best on-screen chemistry of any cast ever, and this epic scene certainly confirms it!
