Liang Wenfeng, a former quant trader turned AI visionary, has taken the artificial intelligence world by storm. After years of perfecting AI-driven trading strategies, he pivoted towards AI research, culminating in the launch of DeepSeek. By January 2025, DeepSeek surpassed ChatGPT to become the #1 free app on the U.S. iOS App Store, challenging Western AI dominance. Liang’s journey from finance to AI is a testament to China’s growing prowess in artificial intelligence.
Liang Wenfeng, born in 1985 in Guangdong, China, pursued a degree in electronic information processing and computer vision at Zhejiang University. During the 2007-2008 financial crisis, he and his classmates began collecting financial market data and experimenting with machine learning for quantitative trading. This early passion for data-driven decision-making would later shape his future in both finance and AI.
After graduation, Liang moved to Chengdu, Sichuan, where he applied AI to different fields, eventually finding remarkable success in finance. In 2013, he co-founded Hangzhou Yakebi Investment Management Co Ltd alongside Xu Jin, an alumnus of Zhejiang University. By 2015, they had established Hangzhou Huanfang Technology Co Ltd, which later evolved into Zhejiang Jiuzhang Asset Management Co Ltd.
In February 2016, Liang and two engineering classmates launched Ningbo High-Flyer Quantitative Investment Management Partnership, leveraging AI and mathematics to optimize financial investments. By 2019, he founded High-Flyer AI, focusing on AI algorithm research, growing it into a financial powerhouse with assets under management exceeding 10 billion yuan.
As of 2025, Wenfeng’s net worth is estimated to be $3.2 Billion Dollars. His wealth primarily comes from his leadership in quantitative trading and AI-driven asset management. High-Flyer AI, the firm he founded, manages approximately $8 billion in assets, making it one of the most successful AI-powered hedge funds in China.
Beyond finance, his AI venture, DeepSeek, has skyrocketed in valuation after its breakthrough in artificial general intelligence (AGI), challenging Western AI giants. DeepSeek’s success on the U.S. iOS App Store, where it overtook ChatGPT in downloads, has further cemented his financial dominance and strategic brilliance.

In 2021, while still running High-Flyer, Liang started purchasing thousands of Nvidia GPUs for an AI research project. Many industry insiders thought he was just a billionaire indulging in a pet project. But in May 2023, he stunned the tech world by announcing that High-Flyer was venturing into artificial general intelligence (AGI) and launching DeepSeek.
Timing was everything. Before the U.S. government imposed AI chip restrictions on China, Liang had already secured 10,000 Nvidia A100 GPUs, ensuring DeepSeek could move forward without foreign reliance. This strategic move positioned DeepSeek as China’s premier AI competitor on the global stage, emphasizing China’s ability to develop cutting-edge AI without relying on Western technology.
DeepSeek quickly gained a reputation for its powerful reasoning and mathematical capabilities, along with an open-source approach that set it apart from Western AI models. Unlike its billion-dollar competitors, DeepSeek prioritized resource efficiency, making AI more accessible and scalable.
On January 27, 2025, DeepSeek surpassed ChatGPT to become the #1 free app on the U.S. iOS App Store. (spawning a massive sell-off of Nvidia stock causing the biggest single day loss in stock market valuation to ANY company in HISTORY). Tech analysts hailed it as “upending AI” and marking the first shot in a global AI space race. Others warned that it signaled a new era of AI brinkmanship between China and the West.

Liang Wenfeng’s evolution from a math-obsessed trader to an AI industry disruptor is nothing short of remarkable. His leadership at DeepSeek is forcing a rethink of AI strategy worldwide, proving that China can develop competitive AI solutions independently.
By combining quantitative trading expertise with artificial intelligence, Liang is reshaping the landscape of AI and finance. Will DeepSeek continue to challenge Western AI dominance, or is this just the beginning of a bigger AI showdown? Let us know in the comments! 💬👇
