Bill Hewlett & Dave Packard start HP in a Palo Alto garage with just $538.
This is the OG Silicon Valley startup—long before venture capitalists were throwing money at ideas like “Uber for Dogs.”
Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory opens in Mountain View, CA.
Founded by William Shockley (one of the guys who invented the transistor), it sets the stage for the chip revolution.
Spoiler: His management style was so bad, his best employees left and founded Fairchild Semiconductor—which basically built Silicon Valley.
Gordon Moore (yep, the guy behind Moore’s Law) and Robert Noyce start Intel.
